Even when survivors retain the services of legal representatives, they must be careful to collect a range of important documents that could prove critical to arguing their cases in court. Some of these may not be obvious, such as records of pay from before and after an incident, which could be used to argue that victims should be compensated for the wages they lost as a result of the wreck.

The type of records may depend on what kind of damages plaintiffs are trying to obtain. For instance, people who want compensation for their physical injuries should use medical records or their caregiver’s contact information to show how severe their injuries were and how long recovery might take. Similarly, individuals who sustain emotional or mental trauma would be smart to furnish evidence of any psychiatric care they receive.

Other evidence helps establish hardships related to property damage or other material costs. Insurance policies, premium payment records, photographs and statements given to claims adjusters could all demonstrate how an accident impacted a survivor’s finances. Police records, traffic tickets and contact information gathered at the scene might help courts determine who was at fault.
